  13.       Once again the Friendly File Viewer has undergone some
  14.     major changes with a more attractive user interface, an
  15.     easier to read help section and more features.  The directory 
  16.     screens of SDC and SDL have been changed to match the new format 
  17.     of FFV.  The PDQCFG environment variable has been replaced with 
  18.     a configuration file and colors can now be configured from 
  19.     within FFV.

  21.       The Slick Directory Changer will now give you an opportunity
  22.     to rescan your drive if it fails to locate a directory.  You
  23.     can also rescan from the directory screen by pressing F1.  If 
  24.     you wish PATH.SDC to reside on a drive other than C you can set 
  25.     the evironment variable SDCROOT to the letter of the desired 
  26.     drive.

  29.       CD ROM drives have come down in price and have increased 
  30.     in popularity since the last version of PDQ.  SDC can take up
  31.     to twenty minutes to scan a CD ROM drive because of the low
  32.     speed and high capacity of this device.  If you don't have
  33.     the patience to wait for SDC to scan your CD ROM drive
  34.     (I don't) you can lock it out with the SDNOSCAN environment
  35.     variable.  To do this, set SDNOSCAN to the letter of the drive
  36.     that you want SDC to ignore.  For example, if you want SDC to 
  37.     ignore drive D put the following line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT

  42.       More than one drive can be specified if you want to lock
  43.     out other drives such as network drives.

  49.       The Friendly File Viewer has been completely reworked.  It
  50.     will now handle files containing over 150,000 lines depending
  51.     on available memory.  Pressing F5 will allow you to read in a 
  52.     new file from the main program and and pressing F5 from the 
  53.     directory screen will allow you to change the file mask. Line
  54.     numbers can be displayed by pressing F6.  
  55.  
  56.       I have also added several command line switches.  The /w 
  57.     switch will cause FFV to wrap lines in all modes, not just 40 
  58.     column modes.  While adding this switch I discovered that the 
  59.     line wrap subroutine did not expand tabs correctly.  This has 
  60.     now been fixed.  I have added a /f switch to handle redirected 
  61.     input and a /b switch to use the BIOS when displaying pages.  
  62.     This last is identical to the "B" setting of PDQCFG.

  64.       The escape key can now be used to terminate searches when
  65.     using GFF and to interrupt scans when using SDC.

  67.       Handling of switches and options has been improved in all
  68.     utilities.

  74.       The 40 column line wrap feature in the previous version
  75.     had some problems with scrolling accurately.  Each 40 column 
  76.     segment is now treated as a separate line and the line number
  77.     at the bottom of the screen will reflect this.

  85.       FFV has received more improvements and will now configure
  86.     itself to use available memory.  This means that FFV can
  87.     run on a system as small as 192k and handle files as large 
  88.     as 65500 lines on 384k and larger systems.  FFV has also 
  89.     been given another increase in speed and is much faster than 
  90.     previous versions.

  92.       When using F4 to display the directory, the previously
  93.     selected file if any will be highlighted.  This seems to
  94.     work better than resetting to the begining of the directory
  95.     each time.

  97.       If a string search fails you will now be returned to your
  98.     previous position in the file instead of being left at the
  99.     end of the file.

  101.       FFV can now search back through the file for a previous
  102.     occurence of the search string.  To invoke this command you
  103.     can use either a "?" or F9 as in LIST.

  105.       Last but not least FFV has a new option to switch your
  106.     display adaptor to extended text modes.  The format is
  107.         
  108.                   ffv -n filename
  109.  
  110.     where n is the actual number of the mode in decimal.  To
  111.     save you grief in converting from hex to decimal I have
  112.     listed common mode numbers in the DOC's.  FFV can even
  113.     handle CGA 40 column modes although the help screen is
  114.     not available in these modes.  Lines will be automatically
  115.     wrapped in 40 column modes.
